Phoenix – Arizona

The Arizona Diamondbacks more than feasted on bad pitching, they exploded on it by averaging 10 runs a game during their 3-game home stand against the Seattle Mariners.

The Diamondbacks scored 14 runs alone in the close out game but the pitching was suspect again as they surrendered 10 runs as well. In game two of the series, the Diamondbacks scored 9 runs but still lost 12 – 9 as Daniel Hudson had a rough outing. Hudson did not get the loss, but the tone was set for a slugfest.

Game three was not much different for the pitching staff as Trevor Cahill gave up five earned runs. But his team picked him up offensively by smashing a team record tying 6 home runs in a game, highlighted by Ryan Roberts inside the park job in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Miguel Montero said after the game “It’s hard not to get excited about something like that”. That also got the fans out of their seats and the atmosphere became electric.

The other good offensive news was Justin Upton, who was booed the previous night, receiving a roaring ovation when he cracked a 3-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning which broke a 5 – 5 tie which allowed the Diamondbacks to never looked back.

This win allowed the Diamondbacks to go 3 up and 3 down in their last six games and win their home stand against the Mariners.

Up next for the Diamondbacks are the Chicago Cubs who come into Chase Fiels fresh off of a series sweep against their cross-town rival Chicago White Sox.

Montero said “it’s important to keep the momentum going” against the Cubs. Maybe this is the series the Diamondbacks sweep and get into a consistent grove.

Notes: Chris Young batted lead-off and went 1 – 5 with a run scored and 3 men left on base.
