Kirkland and Angulo: The Fight Of The Year!!

With all that went on today in sports, Alabama vs. LSU, being the headline and with Pacquiao vs. Marquez coming up, it was easy to lose track of the HBO fight between James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo. But if you missed this fight, please watch every replay that HBO shows, because this was easily the fight of the year.

Angulo knocked Kirkland down 30 seconds into the first round and it looked over. Especially since Kirkland was knocked out in the first found last April against Nobuhiro Ishida, but not this time. With Ann Wolf back in Kirkland’s corner, he seemed prepared not to overreact but to gather himself, avoid another devastating punch and not just hold on, but turn the fight around before the end of the round and knock Angulo down.

Angulo was punched out and never got his stride back. Kirkland owned the fight from the one minute mark of the first round until the fight was eventually stopped with two minutes to go in the sixth round. And just like that, Kirkland is relevant again in the super welterweight division.

This by far was the most entertaining fight of the year. It had the most entertaining first round and it never allowed you to stop watching it. As I said earlier, you have to see this fight to believe it. If there are more fights like this, boxing will come back. Boxing here is your goal, do not mess up this gem with something stupid in the upcoming weeks. Thank you James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo for putting an exclamation point on an incredible sports day with the fight of the year.

I realize this is under boxing, but to claim “fight of the year” and not considering other combat sports is a little one sided. MMA has numerous canidates for fight of the year and there are still potential match ups that could be in the running. Take either fight between Frankie Edgar vs Gray Maynard (1st one in Jan or the last one in Oct), Dan Hardy vs Chris Lytle, Diego Sanchez vs Martin Kampmann or Cheick Kongo vs Pat Barry.
